Most “VPN on Apple TV” guides are still written for the pre-2023 era, when the honest answer was “you can’t, so route it through your router instead.” That changed with tvOS 17 in September 2023 — Apple finally opened up native VPN app support, and most major providers shipped dedicated Apple TV apps within about a year. The workaround is now the fallback, not the only option.
What Changed With tvOS 17
